The two I posted have better capability to resist unthreading, as they're physically locked in. The construction is more sound than a piece of wire stuffed in the hole. Everything has it's proper application, helicoils are fine for some things, but I'd rather go a step further and not worry about it.

Then again, rather than sert-ing my sportster cases I'm cutting out one side of the thread boss, welding it back up and re-drilling/tapping (eventually).

as long as you put lock tite on the heli coil it stays in . i put lock tite on the heli coil before installing then install a bolt with anti seize on it tighten to proper torque anti seize makes the lock tite not stick to bolt threads . at the machine shop i use ez locks since most the time i need blind hole threads http://www.ezlok.com/InsertsMetal/installVideo.html

Thanks for the candle idea will have to give it a shot next time. I have tried welding the nut in place. Mostly with bad results, but will keep trying. I know I will run across more froze bolts.

One thing I have learned over time. If the bolt feels like it is going to break... stop and give it some help. Usually heat will help a lot. Once you break it, it gets a lot harder to get it out.

Looks like a neat idea... As long as you have a flat surface to mount it to.

I see they don't have a price. I just made a post a while back about places having things for sale that are so high priced they won't even put a price on them. Like the motorcycle/car on the side of the road with a ph # and no price. Price is so high they are embarrassed to put it in writing.

I make a lot of my own tools at my shop. need a wrench to do carrier bearing preload on a 14 bolt gm rear end wrench was 140 buck made it myself only cost like 3 bucks me making it . cant believe that much fro this wrench Click image for larger version.

You know, Rod, you could probably write an entire book about all of the tools you have either created from scratch, improved upon, or replicated ....
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I prefer the timesert over the helicoil but still use a lot of helicoils, as they're left over and usually more than good enough. S/F.....Ken M

If you don't break the little tab off the end of the helicoil you can be in big trouble. I've seen where someone forgot to do that and the bolt just spun in the hole. We had to weld a tab to the end of the bolt and break out ye old slide hammer and go to town.

try using extractalloy rods, their slick as hell. just put a nut over the hole stick the rod down to the stud that broke off and weld it up through the nut do a swirley over the top of the nut grab a wrench and back it out. the first time i used it it blew me away it dont bother the threads in the hole at all.dont remember who makes it.

Hi-alloy extractor is one brand. Seem it would make the job easier, but has a cost. If this is a common event in the shop probably worth it. Or TIG/torch round stock and a nut on.

I've done that a handful of times with a 3/32 6011. it works on 3/8" and larger bolts.
