Thread: Torch Alternatives

  1. Default Torch Alternatives

I have a I-MIG 200 but am not a big fan of the OEM Torch it came with. The Shroud has a tendency to stick if i get to close in the corners and the handle in general is not the most comfortable. Are there other companies or even other Everlast styles i can get as a replacement? The welder handles great but i feel i could weld a little longer if it was more comfortable in my hand.

Select euro connector from the dropdown... They seem a little high in price but a profax torch made a world of difference on my machine

Considering the price of a new torch and length,,,you may as well get a spool gun for 20 feet or more,,,,pushing wire in a standard mig gun in lengths over 15 feet have their own set of problems,,especially if the wire is thin,,,

I know the smaller machines don't have the 4 roller drive but the 250 pushes .035 wire through a 20' lead with ease at any speed or position. I only wish the euro connectors were shorter or recessed.

As I see it the issue isn't so much about the amount of rollers,,but about the wind up within the lead,,there is always a certain amount of play within the tube and the longer the tube the more likely compression and springing take place giving erratic feed out of the wire,,,IMO once you go beyond 15 feet this beomes an issue that you never had before,,,and requires some compensation in the way you work the machine...a heavier wire will compensate for this due to it's rigidity,, a thinner wire may not,,,that's why I suggest a spool gun for 20 or more feet..not to say that your unit doesn't work well as you describe,, but something to consider when going for long leads on a mig..

over 15 feet a push pull mig gun system is used to have wire feed rite . there cool use one once it was a 30 foot lead system and wire fed perfectly and it was aluminum wire. I bought the SM 200-N spool gun for my i mig 205 very nice gun made very well and works very smoothly and has a 20 foot lead . plus the wire rolls load easy .. Click image for larger version.

I wired the pot inside the 200N for a fellow years ago. Never got a call back. So I assume it is still running. You had to run the wire speed all the way up, then use the one on the gun to slow it back down (the way I wired it). An old member here made a box like you are talking about and liked it that way better though.

So why don't production units have this as an option? Looks like something that has utility and consumers who are interested in it ....
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

Do not recall the reason. Maybe Oleg or Duncan recall. They have been like that for at least 4 years. I personally only hooked up one out of all of them I have used and people I have talked to.

It is not that hard to turn the panel knob either. And, Gary (old member and friend), like Rod went for the external box anyway. For Gary, it was easier than moving his wheelchair back and forth to tweak. So it has not really been a big demand item and it is pretty easy to mod (two wires) if you wanted it. I can think of maybe 3-4 people that wanted it.
