The rheostat on the torch is an optional torch amperage control.
Upslope is used when welding with the torch trigger to control how gradual or harsh the currentrises to the max setpoint after initiation. Downslope is tapering off after release. Both could also be used with the footpedal if desired. Some welders refer to a similar feature to downslope as crater fill. It tepers off slowly preventing the center of the puddle from shrinking adn causing craters.
