You will love this... Easy way to remove rust. Off garden tools and easily loosen rusted bolts. Just let them sit for a while.
I thought this was crazy until I did some reading on it on the net. Lot of info out there on it. This guy built a tank large enough for big car parts. Like the frame.

I've heard of using Coke to remove rust before, but molasses is a new one to me. Anyone tried the cola approach?

reverse electrolysis works better just need washing soda and a battery charger . throw the rust piece in a plastic tub fill with water add some washing soda . hook negative charger lead to part to derust and positive on a chunk of metal , turn on charger at 10 amps removes every bit of rust . . just make sure chunk of metal dont touch part cleaning. its call reverse de-plating http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp have a cylinder head soaking rite now doing this since rusted solid and cam locked up in head from rust

ID:	6960 you can get it at your local super markets . I use it for getting whites clean when washing close safer than bleach on whites

So where else in the Internet can you learn vital welding skills, use molasses and get your whites whiter!

    Great tips everyone.

I've never used reverse electrolysis before. Have never felt easy putting charged wires into water. I should try it, though. Will get the rust out of the areas that are hard to get to otherwise.
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Washing soda can be found in market among the household cleaners and laundry detergents. It is more caustic (has a higher pH) than baking soda and is pretty aggressive. However I prefer phosphoric acid if you can get it. Driveway cleaners made for removing rust stains from concrete contain phosphoric acid. So does Naval Jelly. Best if you can heat it while derusting. It leaves a flat gray-ish colored iron phosphate deposit that is a good surface for accepting a primer coat if you want to paint over it.

ID:	6962with engines i don't like acids since also removes metal , just like crankshafts put it in acid and its junk . i just want to remove rust not metal and workes good to clean aluminum . put aluminum in acid and see what happens . also good for cleaning metal before powder coating. I have a hot caustic tank at my machine shop just for heck of it put a aluminum intake in it 1 hour later intake was no were in tank ate it up lol

Yes, phosphoric acid is definitely not for aluminum, just rusted steel or iron. The acid reacts with the iron oxide rust and once there's no more rust it won't go any further. The reaction stops. It's ok for derusting engine blocks, but you'd never put a milled surface in it. It would still leave an iron phosphate coating which is not what you would want on the polished surface of a crankshaft or camshaft journal.

Guess you don't want to be mistaking it for the wash basin to wash your face at the end of a hot day!

Not sure if it would have helped me if I was in your shoes at that time but sometimes I'm really, really glad I wear prescription glasses. Sometimes my head isn't thinking as much about safety as I should be and man, good thing I've got something between my eyes and thing I'm working on!

You were very lucky. Obviously you were meant to go on to see and make more things and to melt more metal.

Duddde, that's awesome. Is it ever done on large parts, like car frames or something?

Parts recovered from the Titanic and Monitor have been cleaned with this method. Seen it being done. One was a Dahlgren cannon, substantially larger than a car. S/F.....Ken M
