How does it get all the way around the rod journal with the crank still in the engine and doesn't it sling abrasive and metal chips everywhere inside the block ?

I was thinking the same thing. If it leaves a lot of metal inside the engine wouldn't you have to tear it apart to clean it??? I always have a rough time keeping thing meticulously clean. I have to keep my son from sweeping the floor when engines are open. He is a clean soul!!!!

A long time ago when money was tight, guys would pull a rod or main cap and put a strip of leather in to get them by until they could fix it right or sell it. Just had to take it very easy and not rev it much.

the one end is open and spring loaded you hook it over the journal it has rollers on the end that hangs on crank then there is a knob that adjust it up to touch crank when grinding . it has micrometer readings to see how much you are removing .they had to set ups to turn engine over when grinding it was a electric motor with a small pull with belt you ran on the lower crankshaft pulley also had to pull all the spark plugs so no drag when turning over engine . i have used one once way back when it worked good . as for stuff in engine after done would wash inside of engine block with engine cleaner and wipe down till rag was clean . I have another way i am going to use the tool , i am going to make my lathe table flip up so lathe is on its side . so then can chuck crank shaft in lathe and use crank grinder out of the car . My shop specializes in 4 banger engines so a 4 cylinder crank is small and would fit in my lathe . also would make a rail on the lathe table to mount the tool side bracket . if it was a stick there was a motor assy that turned the rear tire with in gear to turn engine over . I have never heard of anything at all like that. Thanks for sharing the info... Will have to bring that up to a couple mechanic friends to see what they have to say.

How the heck did they come up with turning the rear wheel to turn the crankshaft. That must have been thought up over several beers...
