Proj. 1 Cat 4 Three Homebrew Plasma Tools

Yes, you get 3, count 'em 3, plasma tools for the low, low price of 1 project post!

These were all built for the stock WSD-60 torch supplied with the PP60, but should be easily adaptable to other models as well.

First up, the roller guide:



This is pretty pretty much WYSIWYG, the collar is 1" pipe drilled and tapped for clamping screws( I used 2 because one had a tendency to wiggle loose sometimes) and the height adjustment screws. If doing it again, I would put these adjustment screws higher to keep them away from the wheels, especially since the WSD has a fubsy snout. The center hole was cut out of the fixture hanger and holes drilled and tapped for the axles. The wheels are just washers of an appropriate size, and the "bearings" are actually split lock washers since I didn't have anything more suitable.

The straight edge:

This handy dandy little straight edge for the roller guide is adapted from a skillsaw guide from either Tommy or Norm on TOH.



I just formed an aluminum pan and TIGged a piece of T stock down the center then made a slit to view where your cut will be. Use the largest tip at the lowest pressure to get a nice wide kerf.



Lay out your cuts with soapstone, line it up and cut. It works quite well for cutting slots with the end serving as a stop, and beats the heck out of freehanding a corner clip (at least for me).



The prototype was the reinforced center of a furnace front (shown with my original roller guide) and worked well other than sticking to the work when you splashed.

And last and most definitely least, the worlds simplest, quickest, cheapest, down and dirtiest circle cutter (explained only in pictures!):

Seriously, the roller guide and slot cutter are fantastic. The more I see what can be done with plasma cutters, the more I'm inclined to get one.

Just wait til you see my TIG tools. But seriously, I've been more of an electrical tape and bailing wire guy all my life. We once made about a 10 ft cable out of it to come-along a Willys out of a the bottom of a wash.

Seriously, the roller guide and slot cutter are fantastic. The more I see what can be done with plasma cutters, the more I'm inclined to get one.

They are REALLY nice. Stuff like corrogated roofing that was next to impossible with snips and even quite a pain with a nibbler cuts in seconds with the plasma, and it beats the heck out of cutting 1/2" with a skillsaw and an abrasive blade.
