Thanks I got them fixed up. I started out with 18 gauge wire which is too thick. I got a roll of 20 gauge wire so it would fit inside the holes, and that made it easier, but it is still a pain! I have a cheapo soldering iron, I'm going to invest in a better one.

Gotta get me one of those helping hands.

Nice to hear you got it complete, Sean.

Brian, absolutely correct. Clean, clean, clean. Took me way too long to learn that - even after being told .... I must have a thick head ...
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

The trouble I always have had is if you have old copper... A cable that may have gotten damp. The copper is black so you clean it with sand paper until nice and shiny... Still has trouble getting the solder to stick. Have to clean the stuffing out of it...

I suspect that is why I always tin my wire before trying to solder it in. Better to find out when tinning than melting everything into a mess at the final joint.
