Thread: Damaged during shipping!

  1. Default Damaged during shipping!

Upon opening my PP50 and doing the initial inspection, I noticed a crack on the front corner near the euro connection. Also the air pressure control knob is slightly bent towards one o'clock. It makes the knob difficult to pull out because of the angle. Anyone know if the bent knob will interfere with the normal operation of the knob/machine? What's my next step?

You never know! I would take the cover off to see if any boards are broken. I have ordered several Everlast machines and none of them have arrived broken. I bet it took a good hit. Call sales and see what the next step is.

It's very discouraging to receive a damaged product that I paid a decent amount of money for. How is the customer service on exchanging damaged products? I did power up the unit on 110 voltage and it seemed to power up correctly, all though I haven't cut with it yet (waiting on compressor). It seems there has been multiple members that have had similar "packaging/shipping" issues. Why not use a larger box with a little more padding so this doesn't happen as much. My Millermatic came via UPS and had not one scratch or dent, so packaging is key to preventing this from happening.

Honestly it's really luck. I've read where millermatic 211's have arrived beat to crap. I use to do a lot of ebaying a couple years back. I sent stuff triple wrapped and double boxed and it would still get damaged. I've sent stuff with absolutely no packing material and it arrived just fine. The current foam is adequate and has some give to absorb a fall, but considering the weight of a welder it can only take so much.

Have you ever tried filed an insurance claim with FedEx? I've been through that twice and have never been refunded even though I purchased additional insurance.

The larger the box the more it cost to ship! When fuel prices started going up several years ago UPS and Fedex started using some formula for size and weight.

UPS and FDX will kill you on charges if the item is over a certain dimension and / or certain weight. Regardless of how well you package something, it might not save you:

I've also heard of UPS delivery guys "rolling" large furniture boxes down the street to the destination. Yes, the packages are square. Some will "roll" the package end-over-end if it too cumbersome to carry.
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

My 256 looked like it had been rolled for 2000 miles and the ups driver actually rolled it off the truck end over end (I wasn't there). The box was coming apart and things were hanging out but the machine was OK, save for a very small dent about 6mm across.
The I-Mig 250p was delivered truck freight and had a lift fork run through the crate but it was OK also. The PP60 came on that same crate without a scratch.
I chalk it all up to lazy shipper employees who don't care about the quality of their work. Life goes on.

I hear what you guys are saying, Im at a crossroads, I would rather not send it in and wait for another machine to maybe get here without damage. How will customer service try and rectify the issue?

Please note that I don't work for Everlast so this is just my 2 cents...
If you have a broken bezel, they usually send a replacement. As for the slightly bent stem on the regulator, I would tweak it in the opposite direction to straighten it.

I think everlast should contact ups and have them pay for shipping they damaged it , that's like letting ups get away with breaking stuff and not taking responsibility for it . i would not try to straighten shaft , to me if i am paying hard earned money for something should come not broken and have to repair it when received . not everlast fault but people need to get on shipping company's that don't care . the welders come very well protected in shipping boxes to me packed that well and still is damaged in shipping , some of these ups workers need to be fired

My brother works for FedEx and tells me stories all the time about crap happening to packages. One day he saw a truck leaving the yard with the back open and boxes falling out...... and I am not talking about a delivery truck, I'm talking about an 18 wheeler!

UPS isn't any better.... My old UPS driver was awesome, I could call him or he would call me if I had a package I needed and was not there to get it. He would meet me or leave the packages where ever I would ask him. The new driver doesn't seem to give a crap and has an attitude. We had 115 cases of toothpaste come in one day (vender screwed up) and the office was closed. The new driver left them sitting at the back door (and it was suppose to rain that afternoon). He must have been bragging about it to the old driver (still works for UPS, just a new route) and he called me to let me know the packages were outside. That just shows the old driver cares!

Thanks for the tip, Rod. I think I'm gonna have to get one of those 140's pretty soon. They are just so small and portable. Then I will have to locate a suitably tiny argon cylinder to go with it.

I find that with shipping your driver has a lot to do with how things arrive. But there are also size and weight issues. If a box is light enough it seems like nothing happens to it unless they run it over (I've had that happen). And if it's heavy enough that they can't really move it, you only have to worry about getting forks stuck through it. However, the ones in between are the sizes that get messed up the most. Anything I send, I pack so that it can survive falling off a loading dock (about four feet) as that is a likely fall. Also the conveyors used are close to that height. I love those cardboard pyramid caps to put on top of pallets so they can't stack things on top. Works much better than any kind of labeling. The only shipper that I have never had an issue with is DHL, but I have only used them a dozen or so times, so I might just be lucky.

Yes thanks for the tip Rod... I may too have to pick up one of the 140's.... cant beat the price!! I wonder if it comes with the 5 year warranty or the one year??? I actually have a 20cf that would be perfect to go with it.... only problem is I would need to buy the stuff to fill the tank myself from a larger tank, the price to fill a 20 is almost the same as a 90!!!.

I was thinking of something even smaller, along the lines of a paintball size tank. My goal would be something that I could fit in the case if I only carried the TIG torch. And I would for sure fill it from a big tank.

I actually have several paintball co2 tanks and a fill station for them (I use to be a paintball dealer). But I am guessing that co2 wouldn't be too good for TIG. They do have the high pressure nitrogen tanks that would work. However for the price I think the 20 is what I would go with. It's light and small...

If you can fill it off the large tank that would save $ over the 20. But I wonder how long you can TIG before out of gas. Then flip to stick. I really like the PA160.
