Thread: Need some examples of "clean power" gensets

Default Need some examples of "clean power" gensets

Like the title says, I may have some jobs coming up that require something more than stick(too hot) or scratch start TIG(too slow) and I need to know what model genset I need to keep my welders alive. Or if there's some manner of filter I can run to do the same. S/F.....Ken M

What units do you plan to run on it (brand and amp wise). The quick answer is a over 8/10KW Generac with a 40-50amp 220vac service and AVR.

We run the smaller Everlast welders that are good on 30 amp/220 on a porter cable (wanna say 5500 watts) with no problems. We run the IMIG200 on that unit in the field all the time with flux core. Going to start bring a 150CF tank or argon soon.

I have this one from Northern Tool and it will run an Imig200 all day long. Get the largest generator you can afford! 9,000 running watts would be good, and also there are some generators with 50amp 220v outlet.

"Clean power" refers to the generator's ability to produce a consistent sine wave. You may see "total harmonic distortion" as a measurement or spec on a generator. I think I read anything less than 6% THD is considered clean.

You should not have a problem with most generators as the two unit pull less than 30 amps. Stick with a name brand and 6000+ watts and you should be just fine. Like Sean said, we too can run the IMIG 200 all day on our Porter Cable unit.

I have been considering a generator purchase for some time now, and after last night's wind storm (gusts of up to 103mph) on my weather station here at the house and three trees down I think I am going out to buy one. Although the power was only out for a few hours, one never knows right. Anyway, I was toying around with picking up a used Hobart, Lincoln, or Miller gas powered welder like the Ranger or Bobcat but they are around $3k here at least, and used ones are nearly as much. They are also not too mobile unless you throw them on a trailer, and with a 23hp engine on most drink the fuel I am sure. The local Lowes and Home Depot have a selection of 5k to 11k generators much more reasonably priced, and they appear to be more fuel efficient as well. Looks like for about $900 or less I can get a pretty decent tradational style generator.

I am not an electrican, and only have a working knowledge of this issue so please excuse my ignorance here. But, I had this impression that a newer inverter style generator was needed so not to wreck the hi-tech componets in the new IGBT welders and plasma cutters. Although I have not had to have any of my equipment sent back for repair, I am a big fan of the 5 year warranty on the Everlast products and I do not want to void any of the warranties. Maybe someone from Everlast can give us a solid answer on this. Does Everlast stand behind possible damage caused by electrical power from a generator such as a surges etc?

Also, does anyone have any experience running a PP60 on a generator at full power? If so, what size generator are you using?

Thanks again, this thread has been very helpful and informative on picking a generator.
