Thread: Just received my 140st

  1. Default Just received my 140st

    Hi,

Just got my 140st in the mail yesterday. As a coincidence I got home from my welding class and the box was stuck inside my porch door. Wired up the 220 plug I bought and plugged it in- wow, lights up! Got to scrounge some scrap from the container outfit next door to work so I can try 'er out this afternoon.

The unit included the longer leads. I was afraid I'd end up with the short 6 footers. I'm happy with the work clamp- more heavy duty than I expected. The TIG wand looks like it will be adequate. There's a loose collar on the end of the handle- is there an optional TIG whip cover that is captured by that collar, or is it left over from a design change? One thing I wish for a longer gas line. No problem to splice a length of line to it, but not as neat as one continuous piece, esp. if I want to put the welder on my MIG cart lower shelf and have side by side tanks.

Also, I would like an optional Tweco style clamp rod holder. I used both the Bernard style (as included) and the Tweco style in class and both have their pros and cons. Is that something I can get here, or will any 25mm Dinse style lead off EBay fit the 140st?

Overall the quality of the components, fit, and finish are better than I expected. Can't wait to start burning rods after work...

Yeah, the new style of work clamp is much beefier than what they used to come with, and the longer leads are great. Not sure about what kind of TIG torch you got. Maybe post a picture. Mine came with a WP-17 weldcraft knockoff. Also I had a real long gas hose, prolly close to 10' another indicator that you got a different torch. You can remove the gas hose from the Dinse connector to install a longer one if you want with no splicing. The 25mm Dinse is standard so you can swap it with another lead set. You can also just replace the electrode holder. I will probably do that myself, as I also prefer the clamp type. Just unscrew the handle all the way and you will see the cable is held on by two allen set screws. I think you will be impressed with this little box.

I gave my son a 140ST for Christmas last year, and I keep going to it rather than my Maxstar 150STH! (It's Much easier to carry!)

Last week I deployed out to do a field fix on a shipping container, had to run at the end of 125 feet of extension cord from a 20 amp 120v outlet. Ran 3/32 7014 at 105 amps perfect. My 'fire watcher' could not believe that you could do this without a truck mounted engine-driven giant.

Going out again today, going to grab the 140 again. Great little inverter.

125 feet! I've wondered if the dual voltage machines would operate on a very long extension cord, great that it worked out for you. What kind of work do you do?

    Hi Dave,

Well... I fix stuff. I weld, fabricate, do truck and automotive repair, metalwork, woodwork, even trumpet repair. I have not repaired an elevator, or helicopter,... yet. With a wink, I tell folks that if we were stuck on Gilligan's island, I think I might be able to get us home.

I was using two lengths of 12/3 cord, which was a scenario I tested at the shop first, and I did have a good 20 amp service, too. But I have ran 1/8 7018 on the same setup, it's a great tool.

I've wondered how the Imig200 does on 120v, might have to consider on of those myself. How's yours worked out?

Wow, 125 feet over 12 gauge cord across multiple plug connections. Lots of opportunity for voltage drop yet it burns 1/8 7018 while using a 110v source? That's got to be one of the greatest testaments to this great little welder. I had my eye on the 140st for a long time ... beginning to wish I had one!

Actually, I love my PowerTIG 185 Micro. It's bigger and heavier but it makes up for it in other ways.

    Cheers!
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I've been very pleased with it- I've run MIG, flux core, and stick from 110v with nothing but good results. The flux core and stick capabilities and low machine weight make this a very mobile machine, too.
