thanks

Size is somewhat dependant on length. Here is an online calculator that will give you the required size, just plug in 150 amps and the length you want.

They are DINSE 35 connectors. If you pull back the rubber boots, there is a screw to fasten the cable so you could reuse the ends, if you want.
Long arc, short arc, heliarc and in-the-dark!
BTW Welcome, TBucketFord4! Congrats on the new machine. What's your location and what are you working on, if you don't mind sharing?

DaveO I live in willard, Ohio and I am taking night classes for welding I finally have the time and a little money so i can finally do it. I am working on a reverse flow smoker. Also Rambozo you said 35 dinse is that in metric is see several that are list as 35 but usually have another number with it.

You can pull the rubber cover back and then loosen the set screw and remove the cable. That would save you a few bucks, because they run around $8.00 each. Sometimes you can get a good deal on cable at your LWS. I have also found good deals on cable through Amazon.com

I'm thinking of adding some length to my cables as well and have a question along the same lines.
Using the calculator that Rambozo posted I figure 50' of 3 gauge will allow me 150 amps for my positive. That's clear. But how about the ground cable? Does it need to be the same? For you guys that've been doing this for a while, it might be obvious but I really don't know. I hafta go from my stove to shed to weld which is about 50'. Cable is expensive up here so I'd rather keep cost down by cutting the size a bit. Maybe even solder the joints to get better contact with the dinse connector, if it's possible.

For an extension cord and you only need to run the welder. And you need 3 wires for our single phase units.
Romex (NM), # 8 is good for 40 amps, # 6 is good for 50 amps. Do not run # 8 on a 50 amp breaker.
#8 THWN (dry) or THHN (wet) good for 50 amps, #8 ROMEX is only rated for 40 amps.
Get dual rated (THWN/THHN) #8 and you're good for 60' and 50amps.

Now that I think about it, you're right Mike. An extension cord is the best bet and leaving the leads at stock length. I was originally thinking of leaving the welder indoors at the house and welding outside 50' away but it'll probably be better off just bring the welder with me outside and run an extension cord. The ticker doesn't work so well at night. lol
I have some extra THHN #8 lying around from my last install but not nearly 50' of it, so I'll make due with that for now.

Yea, depending on the unit, take the unit to the work is not a bad idea. I do that with the MIGs and Plasma all the time. The 12' leads can be a challenge sometimes. I would just looking for a cheaper route for you on the cord.
