Thread: I mig 200 won't arc

  1. Default I mig 200 won't arc

Sirs: Purchased an I mig 200 about 1 1/2 years ago and have been very pleased with performance until recently. I was stich welding some sheet metal with flux core (all my welding is outside and breezy) and at about the 30th weld the arc quit. I power cycled, no help. Let rest over night still no arc. Wire feeds ok, green lit on, checked connections inside for tight or arcing. No evidence of arcing inside machine. Fuse ok. Voltage and wire speed windows lit up ok. Have been using 16 volts and 220 wire speed forever. Unit always welds as needed. Lite enough to carry around my truck yard for repairs. Is problem owner fixable? Could use asap.

It's not sounding as if it is. You might want to check your plug though and make sure all your wires are still tight within the plug itself, and check your output at the wall. The green power light is on, or the green light with the exclamation point on?

In your description of troubleshooting you didn't mention that you checked for positive ground... just to take it off the list, how's your ground and ground clamp?

Any btw, welcome, Andyco- I just noticed you're joining us for the first time.

Hey DaveO: Thanks for the welcome. Yes, positive ground. Plugged in and turned the ground plug to the machine a couple of times to make sure was connected ok. Tried arcing to ground clamp and to the exposed copper wires where connects to ground clamp. Zero result. Purchased a used Lincoln sp 120 to finish sheet metal welding. I'm hotrodding a '51 Plymouth. I can live without my Imig for a little while I guess but I do miss it. Its about a good natured welder as I've used. Was a stick welder (SA 200) for years but welding with a wirefeed is so handy and forgiving I don't think I'll go back unless for something only stick would work. Some would say I've gone over to the dark side.

You should see if it will work in stick mode. That my help eliminate some problems.

Have you tried it on a different outlet/circuit ? I've had one leg of the power cut out under load due to a burnt spot on the bus bar behind the breaker.

Might want to check power across the switch and from each side to ground, will require removing the cover and using caution. If you have 230VAC (across) and the 2 x 115 (each leg to ground), you need to call into tech support 877-755-9353.

Take the panel off the welder and see if the fuse is blown. I can't remember but it may have two fuses.

Mike R: Checked both terminals from the power out side of the on/off switch and had 115/120 on both. ..................Mr Murphy: Could only find one fuse and it was ok..Looks like tech support in the morning..Thanks for your help guys.

Got my return # today. I'm not in the clear about what to return. The main unit of course, but how about the mig and stick leads and the ground lead?? I will be removing the OSHA plug.

Return the MIG torch. It will be necessary for testing on that unit...The rest can stay.

Mark: Sent the welder in question by UPS to your service center in Idaho on Nov 28 and was confirmed delivered on Dec 3 by tracking # 1Z7106AX0343495675.
I called Ray in tech support on Jan 8 and he claimed that it was delivered on Dec 8th and they'd get to it soon. Sounds like it was tossed in a corner somewhere and forgotten for a few days. I got tired of waiting for my welder so I purchased a used Lincoln wire feed to finish my project. To be fair, the first time I had trouble with the I Mig 200 I sent it to their San Francisco site and they returned a new unit in around 10 days. Wow! great customer service. This time though, its customer non-service. I have a Linciln SA 200 to cover my heavier welding needs until I get my welder back, but if I were someone that depended on the I Mig to make my living I think I would have to think twice about buying one.... To Mark: Where's my welder????

    Andyco,
You sent it to Ray. Please contact him. He does the service on your unit. You've talked to him. He will be able to tell you what's up.

Got another problem guys: Been doing some build up on a suspension equalizer on one of my truck. Ran about six 3" beads and around five 1" beads using 15.5 volts and around 215 wire speed. After the last bead my helper pointed out that the volts window was reading 000 and the wire speed at 003??? I cycled and 15.5 and 215 re-appeared. I ran a short bead and after the weld the numbers went back to 000 and 003. I ran another bead and the volt numbers while welding changed to 15/16 and around 155 wire speed then went back to 000 and 003 when I finished. Let welder sit over night and the next day the welder did the same thing. The arc and the weld seem to be alright. What to do? One last thing. I happened to bump the welder and the volt/speed windows went back to normal. Bumped it again and it went to zeros. Some sort of connection problem I take it?
