Thread: KTM SMR Build.

  1. #1

    Default KTM SMR Build.

Yesterday, this build wasn't even worth posting about. Now it is because it will involve a good bit of welding.

Since I no longer have my WR. It has been replaced by 2 KTM's.

One of them is a 07 SMR 450.

I think the shifter star is out on this one. It won't shift into gear at all. Unless I manually do it from the shift drum with the clutch cover off. So I ordered the stuff to fix that.

Then I bought a new frame that fits 08+ xcf bodywork.

Here she is as it sits:

The frame/bodywork I bought from it:

This week, on top of working on my trailer, I am going to attempt to swap everything onto the new frame.

Also, me being me, later this year, the bike will get Alpina's, Beringer, Ohlins, and custom duals.

Yesterday I had some time away from my camper to knock out the swap.

    Stripping down the old bike..

    Motor in new frame.

    A little more:

Where I'm at when it got dark. I'll be done tomorrow. The graphics are coming off. New ones on.

As she sits right now. Everything is done, and wired back up. My header wouldn't fit on the new frame, so I going build a full exhaust.

KTM is just a better built engine. Higher end components.

Looks good. I wonder if the orange frame will hold up any better from boot wear than the original anodized black on did. I have two nice sections right above the footpegs on mine that are shiny polished aluminum. Looks rather stupid on an all black frame.

I have plastic frame guards that stop that issue. My yamaha was bad about that.

They don't make that much more. The average WR will put out mid 40's, low 50's with a few cheap mods and an exhaust. The KTM puts out 54 stock, probably around 60 or so with some mods. So it does make 20% more power, but not twice. I will agree though, the KTM is a much higher quality bike and uses better components than the japanese bikes. The KTM's tend to take more preventative maintence to stay tip top, but its worth it in my opinion as I've never had an issue with mine while riding.

OGM motorsport makes CNC bikes for mini's. The frame is a BBR clone. BBR has a frame where the motor sits under the frame in a strange way. And OGM copied it, and paid BBR to use that design.

The OGM bikes aren't cheap ( around $2600, just for the frame/swing arm).

These are high quality race bikes. They have a mini series that is a big deal, and pays big $$$. Most guys start with mini's and then go to AMA supercross.
