Happy New Year to all! I'm off to convince my family that welding all day on New Year's Day is a tradition, just like black eyed peas.

    Just to clear it up:
    http://southernfood.about.com/librar...y/aa123198.htm

A staple in the Southern diet for over 300 years, black-eyed peas have long been associated with good luck. A dish of peas is a New Year's tradition in most areas of the South, thought to bring luck and prosperity for the new year. According to Jessica Harris, author of "Welcome Table," some add a dime to the peas for an extra "boost" of luck to the recipient. Greens, thought to symbolize folding money, are often eaten eaten with the peas.

The peas didn't make it to the pot...baby was sick yesterday and spent the entire afternoon at the ER. Had gone to the doc on NY's eve, and she told us if the fever didn't clear up bring her to the ER the next day. Ended up being a viral infection, but not specific to anything they tested for like RSV, or the flu. (thankfully) This is a small town hospital, but extremely up to date, and clean, so it wasn't as bad as it seems...but they had to do a battery of very very unpleasant tests for a small 8 mo. child... The folks at the hospital are efficient so we sat less than 15 minutes before they brought us back. But ended up sitting in the exam room most of the time waiting for the results of the lab work. But nurses stopped by and even the baby's pediatrician came in as she was on call for the Labor and Delivery. (On top of that, she called today to follow up with us) Baby is much better today, but a high fever for several days is scary for a young one. I don't think the hospital has about 25 rooms, but you couldn't have asked for better treatment on a holiday.

So by the time we got back home, we just popped the smoked ham in and heated up the greens and ended up eating about 9 pm. Blackeyes aren't my favorite, so I substitute purple hulls or brown crowders, usually. Don't forget the ham/hamhock used for seasoning...got to have pork on New Years, preferably in the salted/smoked variety.

Sounds like you had great medical care! Those trips to the ER can be scary, especially for the young one. Hopefully they will be few and far between. Glad she's feeling better!

That would be me... the lightbulb slowly flickers on, to a faint, dim glow.
