Ill have to look into leathers if I ever take on stick welding. I briefly attempted a couple weeks ago with 6011 and I sparks and molten metal flying everywhere and the weld looked like about $12 an hr on the bubba scale. But I learned that I was running way too low amps to stop it from sticking on 1/8" 6011. I went right back to tigging.

6011 is good for welding on old rusted farm stuff but with clean metal, 7018 not as harsh as 6011. I still have a lot to learn about stick welding but it is not that bad for many applications. Try some 7018 if you have access to it, I prefer the Lincoln Excalibur brand because I have had better luck having the slag come off with less effort than Hobart. But for speed, I it is hard to beat a MIG welder.
