I know with more practice adding it on the front side won't be an issue, but for those out of position welds, does it really make a difference?
The benefit is that you tend to preheat the metal and direct your gas coverage better when pushing. You can add filler from just about any direction, but again the area at the leading edge of the puddle is hotter and cleaner. However, for out of position you often have to make exceptions. It's always a good idea to practice with both hands and all directions just so you have those skills when you need them.
