Quick and Dirty thoughts about the helmets.

Jackson:

Better head gear, simple and comfirtable and locks on the top (however) , helmet is very flimsy and more than likely will not hold up well, bad helmet shape and weight to the front ratio and because of this, the Locking feature I love so much on my jackson passive helmet does not work as good. Very large view area, which may or may not be a good thing. Auto dark part can be removed and added to the HSL-100 helmet which is WAY better than the stock helmet.


Miller:

Better helmet plastic but still flimsy, head-gear "new model" confusing and frustrating, also creeps down NO MATTER WHAT! X-mode is good but at school I have note used not once, so I can't comment. I'm not a fan of the green view (I use a jackson passive with a gold plate) but I have done some good welding with it, so this is up to the user. Auto Dark unit can only go in Digital elite model so if you don't like the helmet you are out of luck.



Over all, I'm happy to sell the Miller, I knew I made a mistake the first week of school, and could not recommend it for new students, as you wont get any use of the X-mode.

I just got the jackson so I can't comment, I am confused as to their choice of helmet as the HSL-100 is much better.

I got to try out a Jackson Truesight the other day and I must say I like the amber bandpass.

I wish the torch setting was auto-dark but with the amber bandpass things are pretty visible so its a minor point. I agree the helmet design is a bit puzzling. I found it to be a bit front heavy (maybe because of the beefy front and back protectors and the AAA batteries) but nothing too severe. The shape does not seem to allow as much ventilation as some other helmets I have used.

Other than those rather small niggly things, I really, really liked the helmet and might pick one up at some point.

Tryout a 3M Speedglas next time you're in a shop that sells them.

I've used a Speedglas a good bit. The helmet is nice, but I'll stick with Jackson. I don't like the color at all...sort of a turquoise view color...not natural at all. The amber seems more natural to me.

I used my instructors speedglass, it looked cool from the inside with that breather thing (to stop fogging assume?) I liked it but it wasn't anything the Miller couldnt hang with. The jackson I think gets its advantage with the amber auto dark, even though pretty much everything else is less than stellar, the unique-ness of the amber is what puts it in a league of its own. I just need to buy the HSL-100 to install the Auto dark part in to make this a good helmet.

The speed glass is a top of the line helmet, I don't think you can go wrong with a speed glass.

I read about the side windows in an ad and thought that was pretty unique. I suspect they don't auto darken so what shade are they?

I'm not sure but I think they're shade 5. I don't flip the helmet up nearly as much as one without the side windows.
It comes with blockoffs in case the side windows bother you but I think there would have to be another welder right beside you for that to happen.

pretty sure i run my digital elite in X-Mode all the time with auto darkening. I have the previous head gear but don't really have a problem with it falling down.

I used the xmode once or twice and it worked great, but the new headgear has a following, people love it or hate it. I love Jackson's new headgear.

Bought a Miller Auto-Darkening Helmet the Digital Elite it has a large screen it is the newest updated type came out April 2013 with the newest head gear. I was up and down on what to buy but reading the Everlast Forum I decided to get the Miller with the 3 year warranty if I ever have a problem the distributer for Canada is close. It was not cheap but it was worth it, I tried it at the lowest amps that my PowerTig 250EX will go about 5 to 6 amps and put a 1 inch steel tube near and in front of the weld to cause a shadow to see if the sensors would work welding around tubes it never flickered once, I had it in X mode weld #8 shade at 9 or 10 I can’t see the weld easily 5 amps does not give off a lot of light. The auto on and off is a nice feature and the cut mode 5 to 8 shade and grind set to #3. I also got the cheater lens or as Miller puts it Magnification lens helps us old fellows but I do not wear glasses it just takes the strain off I have 1.25, 2.00 and 2.5 depending on the job most of the time I use a 1.25. I recommend the Miller Digital Elite helmet but I have not tried any other high end new type helmets I do have a Lincoln Ultrashade Platinum Optrel Helmet from Switzerland and a PowerWeld helmet with grind and weld mode but I will be putting them away for loaners.

The only time I have ever had a problem with mine not darkening is when I had too much light on my work area and it was facing or reflecting back into my helmet. Pulling back a tad or changing the angle of sight triggered it to darken though.
