Thread: Training Time

  1. Default Training Time

Have welders at my farm, but since it's 6 hours away from where I work I bought another welder for the house. Purchased the Power Tig 200 DX so I could get some time training when I come home after work. With very little time at my farm to practice; maybe a few hours every 2-3 months, i could not tackle aluminum. However, this machine is allowing me the time and patience to learn aluminum.

Packaged safely, it arrived at my house and fired right up. Everything worked on the welder, no complaints. But with alu, it doesn't matter how many videos you watch, how nice the machine runs, it takes practice before things start coming together.

Service Reps straightened me out quickly on running beads, settings etc. Nice guy and very willing to help.

So, after 3 weeks and a session every night, I'm getting more comfortable under the hood. Still using the WP26 and collets that came with the Kit as advised here on the Forum. In a few more weeks, I will move to the gas lense, but for now it's learn with what's in the garage. It's amazing how addictive running an aluminum bead can be.

Good experience with Everlast. Enjoying the aluminum learning curve!

Sorry, forgot to provide my info. I'm living in Houston where I set up the Everlast 200 DX. I'm an older guy at 54, an engineer and still trying to learn some new welding tricks.

    Great Website.

Welcome aboard Mark. Same age and EE here. Post up some pictures if you have time. Assume you are pushing the welds and not pulling them? It is rare, but some O/A gas guys pick it up pretty fast, but like I said, it's rare.

Glad you like the product. Keep us posted on the progress.

Mike, what is the power supply connection on the back of the PT 200 DX? I don't recognise the connection.

What a great machine. It's an Engineers dream. Fine tuning it has been a pleasure. No "dead band" experienced in any of the adjustments; be it Amps, AC Balance, Frequency, Pre-Flow, Post-Flow or Pulse. Very small changes under similar conditions are noticeable in the weld and sound of the arc. Foot pedal works great and although I'm still learning how to taper off the amps if the puddle gets a little wide the equipment certainly does its job. Thanks for making this a positive experience.

Welcome to the forum. What type of engineer are you? There seams to be many engineers on this forum.

I am a Mechanical Engineer and work in the power industry around NDE and welding for the last year. Most of my experience is in trouble shooting, modifications, licensing/compliance paperwork, plant maintenance, various engineering inspections and what ever else is needed to help keep the units running safely and efficiently.

Could that possibly be an IEC C13 connector for attaching the PC300 water cooler?
Long arc, short arc, heliarc and in-the-dark!

Welcome, Mark. You're likely looking at the 240v connection intended for a water cooler setup.

I've got the same unit and couldn't be happier with it. This group is a great source of knowledge as well.

    Mark,

That is correct it is for a torch water cooler. In the event you upgrade the torch to water cooled. Glad you like the machine.

Thanks Mike! Handy spot for a power source.

DVA....I'm a Petroleum Engineer working for an oil company in Houston. 30 years experience. I've Project Managed Offshore Structures and Facilities where I became interested in welding. I began purchasing welding equipment about 10 years ago. I've welded for years but never very much at one time and always wanted to learn more. I've built boat lifts, Wake Board Tower,Trailers, Deer Stands etc and now I'm learning Tig. Maybe build an aluminum boat but for now just building a gun box for my truck.

We had someone build a (I believe around 40') aluminum boat. Nice guy, might go look up his posts. Think it was on this Everlast board, this is the second forum we've had over the years. He built it and sold the welder later. Bought it just for the job. I would probably go MIG on a boat that size.

We just did a rim repair with the 210EXT. TIG is fun for sure. Keep us posted on the projects and stay safe if they send you offshore.
