Thread: racecar airbox

    Default racecar airbox

this is the beginning of a restrictor-style airbox on this early 80's VW golf, running in the GT-L class. rules require a 25MM inlet restriction. have a 2x2x1" plate with a 40MM opening radiusing (new word?) to 25MM, which will be top-mounted on this box after i weld uup a top and tabs to mount it to the box. car is fueled with a pair of mikuni solex carbs. this is a faast bitch as well. cammed, light.. very nasty car. built by kamei and raced thru the 80's, imported from the UK to the US (california) wher eit was races more.. then it sorta fell off the map. lots of history with this car.. vert proud to have my own work in this thing.

more pics later as it's not quite done. unsure of the mystery metals used. scraps of aluminum.. thats all i know. 4043 rod, 100% argon, 2% thoriated, flow @ about 15CFM, AAC @ about 128.

The composition of the airbox shouldn't matter unless the unit is turbocharged.....But the question I have is why they did that....It looks to me like it would drop the HP some.

    But nice fix.

restrictor plate racing, the great equalizer... Up here we were required to use a 32/36 Webber or stock only.

exactly the reason. .the car makes too muck power for the class it's in since it's a f'ing MONSTER. i think the cap is (i think) 160HP or something like that. it makes (guessing) 170+hp.

and unsure on the weight, but if i had to guess... maybe 1800lbs or somewhere close to that.. probably closer to 1600 lbs..

    absolute go-kart.

I've raced against a few of those, with not to much success. Great race cars.

well, the motor (to me) is an unknown.. kamei probabably knows whats in the sauce.. the president of the company is supposed to fly over to see the car after almost 30 years supposedly. his dad built the car and started kamei..

well, finished product.. not the greatest thing, but the first thing i ever fabbed up in aluminum, and done all with my super 200P

it's definitely not hte greatest, but not "that" bad.. at least i hope not.

Not bad indeed. Looks pretty good for a first timer! Are you sure you haven't done it once or twice?

I've seen people try it for the first time and the Aluminum is unrecognizable by the end of their weld!

Nice to see what someone else's Super200P is out doing.

I'm curious if you used the Super200P's plasma cutting function on this in addition to the obviously used AC TIG welding function?
