Thread: PP205 on a 240v 30A Dryer Plug

  1. Default PP205 on a 240v 30A Dryer Plug

I am moving and my new place (rental) only has a 240v 30A dryer plug. I am planning on making a pig tail from my 6-50 plug to the dryer plug to run my PP205. I believe this will work I just won't get the max 250A's out of it which is ok because I usually stay below 130A. Anyone doing this currently? Will this hurt my machine? Any info is appreciated?

Apologies for asking again as I thought I had seen this answer before but can't seem to find the thread.

Per the specs of the newest one, the inrush is 30.8A and running is probably 25A (even though it shows 28A in the specs) at 240V. Should work ok for you.

The spec also shows 175A Max output. Not sure if that is correct or if it is higher?

Good luck with the move. Is the new dryer a 3-wire or 4-wire? You may have some figuring out to do, depending.

Start and end amp controls go to 175, max output is 200A @ 60%

A 30A circuit should handle this machine, but right at the edge.

    Thanks for the replies.

A little clarification, I have a 2011 PP205 (not digital) and the dryer plug is the 3 prong type (10-30).

So it sounds like I will be ok as long as I get past the in rush. Is the in rush when I turn the machine on or every time I start the arc? And is it dependent on the amp settings?

Arc start and yes. If you keep the welding amps down, the max amp draw will stay down too. I've been running my 200dx on a 20a breaker for a while but have not run the machine above 150-160a and even then only in short bursts. Never had a trip.

I wouldn't worry about the inrush (provided you actually have a full 240V at the plug).

Give it a try and see what happens. The breaker usually won't trip from a very short overage, and only 1 amp over likey wouldn't trip it anyway.
