Thread: 6010 on power itig 200

  1. Default 6010 on power itig 200

So my dad surprised me with an early Christmas present and I see that it can not run 6010. Just wanted to know why? Will it shorten life span? Unstable arc? I have two 50 lb cans of 6010 I got from Craigslist and need to use them or pass them on. Thanks.

A higher voltage is required to run 6010. It'll run 6011, which performs pretty close to the 6010. The arc isn't real stable with 6010.

Thanks, I googled it and found a good response like yours except in detail. It is on the miller forum. I will pick up some 6011 tonight and see how great everlast welders are. Super excited just to run a bead.

What are you welding that requires a 6010/6011 rod ?

I am in school and they require a 6010/6011 root pass, and then 7018 for a hot pass and cap. I am going to bring up in class about using 7018 for a root pass. I keep reading that people are testing for certs this way. I am having a little trouble getting full penetration on 3/8 with a bevel and 3/32 landing. But hopefully I will get better with it at time.

i also have read posts that talk about a 7018 root pass but i have not seen it once in all the ads for 6G certs. i have never seen 6011 given as an option for a root pass in lieu of 6010.

is that 6010/6011 choice given because some of the machines won't run the 6010?

if you are in school and they have an established curriculum it's probably best to follow what is laid out for you. why would you want to become proficient at doing the root pass with

7018 when it's more than likely that you won't be asked to do that in the real world.

Watco, a railcar repair/rebuild company here where I live only uses 7018 for stick. They claim their insurance will not allow them to use a lower "rated" tensile strength rod. So, it's 7018, root, and cap all the way. Of course they use flux core for other things, and now they are going to be using dual shield.

if they are building railcars i would be surprised if they are only using 7018; i think either you don't know or you made that up.

i assumed he was talking about a 6G test but it's possible he's talkng about a plate test. guess he'll have to confirm that.

No, I know. I've talked to several welder friends that work there. I have also talked with people that are inspectors there. I have also talked with the local welding instructor at the trade school who has had to start retraining his students to be able to pass the 7018 all the way out test...1" plate, 10" long so they can hire on. Beyond that I am fuzzy on the details, but I believe they have a 3G test and 4G.

They rebuild and repair the cars, not make them.

Found this from one of the local web job posting requirements:
....6g tig & stick, root & hot pass 7018 fill and cap, 1" plate 3 and 4g over head test.

yeah right. you should have quit a ways back.

is that a cut and paste? why did they preface it with an ellipsis or is that a little editing on your part. l

I cut and pasted the relevant material from the site and used the elipses to indicate that there was typical job stuff in front of it. What a lot of welders like you don't consider is that you may know what you know, but outside of that, your experience is limited, and the welding world is greater than your knowledge base and your ability to keep pace with new developments and trends in the industry.

Can I consider that you are trying to call me a liar? What would I stand to gain? See, liars have reasons to lie. I had none. I was simply offering my bit of broad based knowledge about the issue to help the OP. I talk to welders and customers all over the United states and I glean information from them. This is part of my job. Lying about it would only harm him, and as a customer, why would I want to do that?

I think Carl, shield arc, or cep on some forums has mentioned that this was something he did as well from time to time, or that he too has heard of it.

Fdc, I am going to chalk up your adversarial and unhelpful posts tonight to a imbibing half a beer too many.
    Good night.
