All gas cylinders sold in this country must have a DOT stamp. Depending on how they were tested will determine how long they are good for before requiring a retest. Even HF ones are certified. A hydrostatic test with a plus sign after it is good for a 10% overfill. A star means that the retest is 10 years instead of 5. When exchanging cylinders, make sure the one you get is not close to date, and you will never have to pay for a hydro test.

There are actually not that many companies that still make gas cylinders. It is a very specialized manufacturing process.

Mark has mentioned a few times that he has a roundabout way to get a bottle for little to no cost. Just find a deal on a used welder with bottle, then resell the welder and keep the bottle.
As you can see from the gas pricing, it's best to use the biggest bottle that you can. However, if all you can manage is a small one, you can start with that, then later it can become your backup/portable bottle when you get a larger one for the shop.

My job is having a "Plant Shutdown" next week. And I was planning on getting the Cutoff saw next month. Not sure if I can swing both the Saw and Bottle.

Today I went to the place in Mt Holly. He said the Fill on a 60 would run $30. He might have a Used tank coming in tomorrow. A 60CF from an AC/Refrigeration man that is closing his business. Its a Nitrogen tank. Same 580 Valve. He didn't give me an exact price. But said Used 60s run $50-$60. I may have found what I need. Oh yeah, Mt Holly is a UEZ. So its a 3.5% Sales Tax zone. Instead of the full 7%.

Got the 60 CF Filled for $60 today. While I was there someone else was asking for one. The Stamp is 9/14.

We get 350+ tanks done for $28. That is a lot of money. 150 here is $34 on owner tanks.

WOW, they sure are high. And the gas for 40 miles is the sales tax pretty much.

Good news, gas on MIG goes a lot further that TIG.

I gave up on finding the plastic plugs for the open ends. Attempted to make metal ones. Using 16G sheet metal. That was fun bending. Had to use a vise and a dead blow hammer. Belt sander to grind it to fit. Welded it in place. Painted it. Drying now.

Why did you have to bend it? Most people just cut a square and weld it in place.

Wasn't sure if I did that it would stay in place. I wanted it to sit inside.

Sure it will. Just hold it in place with a magnet, tack then weld. Better yet, allow for a cap when you fit up your tubing.

I cut the Caps out with Aviation Snips. They weren't very square.

This whole project was Good on paper. Not in practice. Did not come out as I had intended. I shouldn't be surprised. Story of my life.

A grinder with a flap disc can take care of a multitude of welding sins.

Or as they say; Never weld more in the morning than you can grind off in the afternoon.

Yep, I just did a quick fix for one of my truck drivers because I felt sorry for him after seeing what his "uncle" did. I have no idea why his "uncle's" weld broke.
I just ground out the bird shi* with a flap disc, made a sound weld and then filled the empty area with weld and smoothed it with the same flap disc.
I didn't bother with the couple of tiny little voids left because the weld was strong, I was tired and the job was a freebie. I think he should buy me lunch.
