Thread: Wanting to trade a 250EX for a Powertig 185DV.

  1. #1

Default Wanting to trade a 250EX for a Powertig 185DV.

I really need a machine that is capable of running on 110V. I am looking to trade my older 250EX for a Powertig 185. I'd only want to trade the boxes straight up. I don't have any need for anything else. I am located in the NYC/NNJ area, but can and will travel a good ways to trade in person, but I wouldn't mind shipping, either.

I can be contacted via email (beaverbuilds@gmail.com) if you are interested.

Your first post if you were to sell the 250EX what are you looking for out of it and Welcome to the forum.

Hmmm . . . I thought I had posted some back when I first joined the forum just prior to my initial purchase of the 250EX, which as you can see was in 2011. Thanks for the welcome.

If I were to sell it, I'd like to get $900 plus the cost of shipping. Basically, the price of a 185DV. If that is too much to ask, that's fine, but I am basically not wanting to come out of pocket too much to end up with a TIG box I can use more frequently; the 185DV being the perfect basic box for my needs. I really do love the simple adjustability of the 250EX for fine tuning the AC arc for the fix-it work I do, but, again, it isn't really necessary and right now I value doing more versus having to wait to get things stuck together.

I think you'd probably get more than that out of it. But I'd put it at 1300 or better. You could then get the 200DV. This would give you extra power, and also give you the pulse and stuff. Prices do seem to hold on these units pretty well, so I'd look into listing it on Ebay. Start the bidding 500.00 and put your reserve at 900, then see what you can get.

I didn't know they help their value that well. The thing is I'd rather have a simpler machine I can use more often. I figured this kind of deal might appeal to someone more than just trying to sell it, as I generally prefer to barter.

    Thanks for the helpful information!

They do. Many cases of units reaching high values on Ebay and locally. The 200DV is a simpler unit but offers dual voltage and better duty cycle.

    That is certainly encouraging.

I really like the 200DX. I'll get my box up on ebay and see how it does. If it does pull in most of $1k, I'd gladly drop the bit extra for the 200DX.

Wouldn't hurt to blow off the dust before photographing. It does look in great shape. Good luck on your sale.

You are absolutely correct. However, I didn't take the photos, as the box is currently in the basement of a friend's house.

Thanks! I also hope the sale goes well. I'd like to get practicing to pass some pipe tests.

I think the mistake in that was that you put a "buy it now" price. That usually puts a damper on sales as people already suspect the reserve price and aren't willing to bid. Part of the fun is getting it a 990.00 not 1000.00

I usually prefer buy it now on ebay. You might be right, though. If it doesn't sell, I'll change that and a few other things and re-list it.

    Thanks!

IMHO, for what ever that's worth....

You're expecting WAY TOO Much for it. I know the "company line" here is to tell you it's worth 75-80% of the original purchase price but In REALITY, you have to consider from the purchaser side not what They want to foster in owner confidence (if Everlast actually had That kind of confidence they would extend the warranty to the second owner instead of taking the opportunity to get out of it)

So you have a $1400 machine that's several years old and missing $300 worth of accessories (Torch/Ground/Stinger/Pedal/Regulator/etc.) and the $100 shipping. PLUS compared to a New one, the 5yr Warranty (I'm gonna put $200 on that). This means that NO ONE, with any sense, would spend $1000, add the $600 missing to it, to have a Used welder for what they could have gotten a New one for!

To ME, USED is worth 1/2 of NEW. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to take the chance and lose a warranty. With your missing stuff I think the "Reserve Not Met" of $600 is top-of-the-Mark.

You should immediately contact the dope who was going to spend $1000 (shipped) and take his money and RUN By the time he gets what he'll need, he's foolish to pay that much.

A few years back I bought a PP256, less than a yr old that the guy wanted $1,200 for. I said it was worth $800 to me (1/2 of new) he said NO but I could come over and look at it. When I saw that the Torch & Pedal had never been used (he had just done some Plasma Cutting). Before he invested in Argon he gave Tig welding a try and decided it wasn't for him and wanted out. I called Everlast to see if I could extend, even Purchase, the warranty but they were adamant about it. I was out-of-luck and the Seller was going to have to give me a substantial discount to account for it....

    We settled on $900

That's mostly what I was expecting, except it just sold at my reserve price of $900, plus shipping.

I think it is worth that much, and someone else did, too. It is only worth what people are willing to pay, even if others consist it too much or too little.

I'm just waiting to get paid at this point. That's always a gamble on ebay, I know, but, that's the chance one takes when selling something online.

Once the money clears, I'll have to decide if I'll just but the 185DV or put in the extra money for the 200DV.

Thanks for everyone's help and feedback!

Blaster, in Reality, I don't think you'be kept track of our units. But I've kept watch over dozens of sales of our products online and even helped resell a few. I've seen consistently good returns for the customer when resales take place. They sell well and sell high. 900 isn't bad. I think you would have seen more for it as I think the mistake was to post the buy it now price. But it appears to be sold. I get calls all the time for someone looking for a used or refurb unit...People have budgets, and to get something within it, is a good deal if it gets them what they want...even if it is used.

Looks like the company "line" was right. And it has been several times before too. We have nothing to loose and eveything to gain here by giving a realistic thought based off our observations and understanding of the market. Giving the customer an inflated, unrealistic expectation in selling it when he is considering buying another unit AFTER he sells the old one, is not going to help us one little bit.

As far as extending the warranty, the original purchaser can call in and discuss the circumstances. It's no guarantee, but we have extended them for certain cases such as hardship etc. But Miller doesn't extend theirs either... on paper.

Well you got 90% of the buy it now price plus the shipping...and 65% of the rough purchase cost without the addons. If it had been another brand unit that you paid 2500.00 for, you might have had gotten a higher percentage back, but lost more money in the end. Or who knows...you may have gotten bout the same percentage loss and lost even more. I've seen slightly used Dynasty's sell for 1800.00 used. That would be well more than that.

Come On guys,,,,, make sense of this for me (financial sense) that is...

This "Boob" pays $1000. He now has to buy everything else. You think $300 is wrong?

So now he's got $1300 into a used and what's worse, an unwarranteed, welder with an "unknown" history (I'm sure it's fine but, how can He be?) all to have saved himself just a couple of hundred bucks...
