Thread: alluminum with I-rmig 140e

  1. Default alluminum with I-rmig 140e

How thick of alluminum can this unit handle with the spool gun? also can it use the 200 amp binzel gun for the i-mig 205p? I want a little welder to keep in the tuck when I just have to fix litttle things at the harbor on boats and the lighter the better. Thanks even though my tig is dead I have to feel it was just a bad one. I am putting some trust in green and about to buy 3 more welders for our mobile unit. hopefully all will go smooth.

The unit can handle any job any other 140 can handle on Aluminum. I think the gun will fit, though we sell a lighter gun for that unit than we did for the 205P.

What TIG did you have? Did you send it in?

My 2 cents? Get the i-mig 200. I absolutely love mine, I've done lots of boat work with it and it's my FAV stick machine with 3/32 7018. Having said "lots of boat work" I will qualify that by saying that I control its output in terms of duty cycle. I consider it the bare minimum for what I do. I do not own a 140 but my guess is that you'll be unhappy with its output on AL on anything but gauge material. I know the price point difference but just think about the loss if it doesn't perform as you hope.

In no way am I an Everlast shill, as a matter of fact, if you read some of my other posts you'd conclude the opposite but the fact is I use (own two machines) and like their equipment. That's a fact.

The i MIG 200 is not the same as yours Yofish. It's changed greatly.

I have the ext 210 power tig. No error light but can't get any real amps just sparks. I am trying to figure out how to pull the board and send that in since I live in Hawaii and the 200 $ shipping will kill me. I was planning on buying the i-mig 205p later maybe in a month but wanted a real little light mig machine but maybe its not worth having both. I just wanted one spool gun for both thats why I asked about that. Still dont know if I should just get a 250P and have the 140 or 205p and 140 or just 205p. lol I am just starting out on my own. My boss is letting me do my own stuff a couple days a week and I have a shop but do a alot of mobile work. Mostly stainless and alluminum. Almost all the steel is heavy so I stick it. Pretty bummed about my TIG but hopefully the next one is better. I kinda wish I just got the 315 ext instead now. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Its hard here to make a $ since everything costs $$$$$ and pays $ but I love Maui and am very excited about slowly moving into my own business. I have a huge bid on Mon and hopefully my Tig wont be too long or I might have to buy the bigger mig a little earlier than I can afford.

If you are running alum and heavy steel with your mobil business I would look at the MTS250S . It has enough power to do some pretty heavy steel. I just got one and am getting it dialed in for almost the same kind of work. I do a lot of heavy steel welding. The problem with mig is on heavy steel you get cold cracking just like you can get if you do not use low- hi rod with stick. I just got my knurled drive wheel for .045 and 1/16 flux core . I am ordering some hobart fabshield 21B in .045 for the general fab work and some hobart fabshield xlr-8 for the heavy stuff in 1/16 ( this is a low-hi wire). It will be way faster than stick welding it. Mate the MTS to a 30A gun and you will have a killer portable system for alum and steel.that is capable in the shop as well. The MTS can do stick and DC tig too when the need is there.

The MTS250S is a nice $ machine. We have a IMIG200. 205P and 250P. The 200 is the light "go to" machine and it will handle aluminum and run on a 5500 watt generator. Has for many years. The 250P is the roll around stay in the shop machine. It can handle a lot of work. If I did it over I would get a 200 and 250 (no pulse; pulse sometimes requires a little test runs). I have \never used the MTS250P so I can not compare. I like the feature list and all weld modes.

You confuse me. You say the MTS250S is a nice machine but then state that you have never used "the MTS250P".

I'm really interested in the 250P to use in my boat building business but try as I might, can't get ANY user feedback. You say that you wouldn't get the pulse again; would you be so kind as to say why? You state that pulse requires little test runs. That does not surprise me, is that the only reason you don't like it?

Are you guys talking about the I MIg 250P or is there a new MTS250 with the pulse feature?

There is a new MTS 251Si coming with several new features including pulse MIG. It will replace the 250S.

I was not aware of this new model, not that it is a big deal to me . I would not use the pulse feature much. Some like Yofish would have a big need for it.

Any chance of a pulse on pulse model in the near future?

This model is scheduled to have HF start for TIG as well (no not AC). Pulse DC TIG too.

Care to tell more? I'm glad this came up as I am going to buy a pulse machine in the near future. When will it appear? Hopefully it's not synergic or at least has an override.

This is off topic a bit but it does, at least, include the word PULSE. The picturesincluded shows a skiff I designed that is being built by someone else as I couldn't fit it into the schedule. Anyway, the two young men that are putting it together under my direction (they've never built a boat before) bought a complete Miller set up a year ago: XMT 304 with an OPTIMA pulse control, XR wire feeder with water cooler and water cooled 30A gun. They paid over 11K for the whole taco. About a month ago I stopped in to see how they were doing; the day before the XMT smoked, as in billowing toxic yellow clouds. Two weeks later the XR box went oingo-boingo (erratic feeding) then completely crashed, hooked up to an old spare power supply. So, they have been finishing the project with an old 30A spool gun off the old power supply! Of course, it's under warrantee, but the service with Miller really sucks in Alaska. Not to throw gas on the China Vs. USA debate but it is an example of poor QC with a major. Frankly, in my moving about in the welding world here in AK, I've heard increasing unkind words from some about mostly Miller equipment.

It also has a synergic feature. But just as the old one, it can be used in the standard mode without the synergic operation, but with the spool gun, it is a neat feature if you need it because one knob will adjust both wire speed and voltage proportionately.

Would that that would be good for me but I'll be hooking whatever supply I choose to an XR box w/30A gun. I really wish that Everlast would get with the program on a real MIG aluminum welder, I think you guys are missing the boat on that. I can understand that expecting a push-pull feder might be daunting but I think you could relatively easily make hookups for 30A, Prince and Lincoln spool guns for your machines. If me and Kempy can do it, certainly you guys can!

Might re-read that post. I said it is a nice machine (many people have stated that as well). Basically I say it's a nice machine based on the feature rich specs, S mode and MIG/TIG/Stick. But I felt I should state that I have not "personally" used one.

Then I stated the machines we use almost daily and what we like them for.

Yofish, From what I see with my MTS250 all that needs to be done to a 30A gun is to put a Dinse connector on the power cable and buy a 7 pin connector from everlast. Then just follow the wire schematics for both the 30a and MTS to connect it. I think it will even work with the synergic function. I am not sure why Kempy hooked his power lead to the euro mig gun connection. The 30A should hook up just like an Everlast spool gun does. Unless I am missing something .
