Thread: Generator recommendation

    Default Generator recommendation

    Hi guys,
It's been a while since I was around, but I'm in the market for a welder again. I talked to Oleg last week (who is still the man) and I'm going to get a 280sth.

I know there's been a lot of talk over the years on 'clean power' and 'pure sine' generators, etc, so I was wondering what the everlast recommended generator would be. I can't see using full power in a portable situation, I'm mostly getting the big unit so I can burn 150a at 100% duty and still have a gas solenoid if I need to TIG something. Most of the time it will be used with 3/32 or 1/8" 6010, so not stressing anything there.

So, just soliciting opinions on what won't void the warranty or break anything prematurely. any figures for THD or specific waveform issues I should look out for (I have a scope I could drag out, but I don't know how I'm going to test them if they're new)

    Thanks in advance

We don't test or keep record of an impossibly evolving selection of generators on the market. They should meet the minimum wattage demand of the unit (volts input x's amps peak input requirement) and they should definitely be rated as "clean" power from the manufacter (less than 5%THD).

So a generator capable of supplying the rated inrush current at less than 5% quoted THD is all I need? Coming from amplifier design, that's a metric crap ton of distortion, but I've seen a bunch rated at 5% or less so if that's the ticket it simplifies my search a bunch. Thanks

Well your household current is around that level in many areas of the country.
