Thread: PP50 consumables, ipt60 torch

  1. Default PP50 consumables, ipt60 torch

I have a 2015, I believe, PP50 with an IPT60 torch. I don't understand why the 60 amp torch with a 50 amp machine. I'm going through consumables a lot faster than I'd like and checking the prices from Everlast has me wondering if they can be had anywhere else?? Could I get the lesser, 45 amp, consumables? I don't run the machine beyond 40 amps and would like a smaller cut if possible, and cheaper consumables.

Some torches have reduced sized consumables for low power narrow kerf cutting , not sure about that model. Make sure your air is bone dry or you will go through them a lot faster.

Because a torch is rated for a certain amperage, does not make it unfit for operating at other lower amperages. Several companies use a larger torch and adjust the consumable size to fit the amperage. This is what should be done anytime amperage is adjusted downward. One size will generally accommodate 10 amps worth of adjustment. The PT60 comes equipped with a 50-60 amp consumable.

With that said, in comparing other competitor's torches, it appears that the tips/nozzles are related to Lincoln's torches on their tomahawk series. Ther is a different in how the consumable attaches with a difference in male vs. female threads. But other than that they appear the same. I haven't personally tried, them, but if you want a smaller tip and we don't have it in stock (though we should have some) it may be worth looking at the lincoln tips...but don't expect the price to be cheaper.

Thanks guys. I follow what you're saying about the torch rating being what it is. But, I'm way more interested in a narrow kerf than all out capability. I don't work with anything over 1/4", and usually it's 1/8", so I'm running the machine well below what the tip size is for. I had a thermal dynamics machine a few years ago and it came with an assortment of tip sizes for whatever range you were cutting, worked pretty well. I'll check with the welding shop locally and see if I can match anything up.

We should have smaller consumables...if not...HTP, among others sells a 40 amp kit for the torch. Now, they use the PT40 version but the way the torch is made is that the consumables will fit the larger torches as they are the same part numbers (the OEM numbers at least) offered for the optional consumables.

OK, I wanted to make sure this would work before I posted.

I have been looking for smaller tips for my PT-60 as I cut mainly thin sheetmetal (like late model auto body panels). Stumbled across a forum discussing the PT-40 torch found on Harbor Freight plasma cutters. HF stocks the .8mm tips (part#62771, 5 pieces for $14.99 US). I have been cutting for about an hour and it is working well. No problems. The only dimensional difference of note is the internal depth of the tip (.3mm deeper on the HF part) where the striker sits, and it doesn't seem to have a negative effect. Pilot arc struck OK without a problem. Ramped the amps down to 20 and it still cut like butter.

Anyone gets a line on .65 or .7 tips, drop me a message.

Thanks for the heads up. I have some sheet metal to cut and now I can save my big tips for the heavy stuff.

The harbor freight tips aren't actually pt series tips...they are the S-45 tips. Yes, they will work (some of them will anyway), but not ideal. This was at least a true statement a month or so ago when I checked. They are selling them with the pt series torches but they have not upgraded to the newer pt style consumables. I imagine they have a stock of several hundred thousand to use up first...and since they will interchange somewhat, though they do tend to blow fuses, I imagine they don't care.

Good to know. I miked the replacement tip every which way to verify the dimensions.

Do you plan to stock smaller\different tips? Any line on some real OEM consumables that Everlast doesn't stock?

Yes we do plan on stocking more as demand rises for alternate sizes, configurations. Again, HTP right now is the best source on these for smaller sizes and they are oem.
