Thread: CK SteadyGrip Pistol Grip Amptrol Works On Everest TIG Welders

  1. Default CK SteadyGrip Pistol Grip Amptrol Works On Everest TIG Welders

Yes, I’m using one on my Everest 210 EXT, which ideally calls a 47K potentiometer on foot pedals and hand amptrols for TIG torches.

Interestingly, though, the CK SteadyGrip version I obtained from TigDepot has a 25K pot on it, which works fine at the torch, but does display some anomalous amp readouts at the machine panel, which was much the same as was showing on Mr. TIG’s video demonstrating the CK SteadyGrip that he was using with an Everest 325EXT, which is what prompted my interest to begin with.

Anyway, the anomalous behavior at the panel readout is not a problem, and Mr. TIG is the only source that seems to have developed the CK SteadyGrip for the 7-pin Panasonic connector and TIG welders such as Everest, AHP, and Longevity, even though CK Worldwide doesn’t seem to have developed any of the new SteadyGrip model with a 47K or 50K pot, which seems a foolish move on the part of CK, as there is probably a lot of imported TIG welder users that could be served and profited from if they did.

But, in the meanwhile, Mr. TIG and the staff at TigDepot seem to have developed an immediate solution for Everest and other import TIG welders, for use of this somewhat innovative new pistol-grip, hand-amptrol from CK.

Of course, many here on the forum know that my twists and turns on this subject took up a couple of threads here recently. But, the forum was kind of quiet. And now I’ll lay the matter to rest, so to speak, by including a link to a video that I just uploaded to my YouTube Channel, which outlines the matter for forum members here, and undoubtedly for others, globally, who may wish to purchase a SteadyGrip unit for their imported TIG welder that may or may not have a 7-pin Panasonic connector.

    Peace be with you all,
    C. Livingstone

Thanks for sharing and updating. Haven't watched the video yet, but was Mr. Tig able to add insight of getting it to work with the Everlast? I know you sent it back...Thanks again for sharing!!

It just looks So,,, clunky to me, I mean my torch has a short cap, I turn & twist it, roll it with my finger tips getting it around what I'm welding....

Looks like it would be like welding with a red brick duct taped to my glove. And to then, add Insult to Injury,,, you paid HOW MUCH for that thing???

I donno,,, I think maybe they might have been doing you a favor when they told you to ship it back

Good Luck, hope it works-out for you, I guess you plan on flat welding in only Wide Open spaces with it?

    Well,

It's not a fixed back cap, so it can be changed to a shorter one or a button style. Yes, it's pricey, like a lot of the CK stuff. Even the typical CK hand amptrol cable assemblies are just under $200.

Like I mentioned in the video, it's not my only torch, and if I ultimately find I don't like it so well, I'll go back to what I was using before. But I'm really liking the the way it handles and how it positions, also how, like I also mentioned in the video, that it'll probably like it even better when I get the #17 flex head torch on there. And there's also the benefit in getting your hand directly off the torch, which keeps your hand cool.

Sure, it's undoubtedly not for everyone, and it's still not completely perfected for machines that take a 47 or 50K pot, as the 25K pot is the top Ohm rating that CK seems to want to develop for. But, Mr. TIG stated in an email to me that he's going to discuss the matter further with the CK Worldwide people, when he sees them at the upcoming FabTech show.

    Peace to you all,
    C. Livingstone

I was watching you video on the CK hand controller and you said you had a 805 come up on your Amp/Function display screen that is a code, the codes are called Self-protection one has been engaged there are four of them 801, 802, 803, and 805. I have a Powertig 325EXT and had a Powertig 255EXT that showed that code but moved up to the codes on the Powertig 255/325EXT's, if you leave the amp controller on and do not make an arc it will give a 805 code after 2 or 3 seconds but if you move the controller or foot pedal controller back to the off position it will go away and show the preset amps and then it will start to work if you do not go to off position it will not make an arc.
If you look at the display it will show the amp light on in red and the ON light in green and the warning light in green not easy to see when the code 805 show up.

    Hey,

    Thanks for that info, Kempy.

If I'm understanding what you mean, that 805 code was only showing because I was actuating the pot, for demonstration purposes, without starting an arc, i.e., it was a normal behavior. But I'll look again, closer, later, to see if I'm missing something about what you're saying.

So, maybe the 25K CK pot on my 47K machine doesn't have any actual anomalies at the panel readout at all. Cool! Because, I'm not an expert in TIG welding, but I'm initially liking this SteadyGrip. And maybe now other Everest users can be more confident to try one, if they like.

    Peace to you,
