Everlast 210EXT Used To Refurb & Refit a 42” Deck To 30” Dixon Mower

Here is a recent and fun project, which shows me using my Everlast 210EXT on both mild steel and also fabricating an aluminum diamond plate pulley guard, which is only my third actual aluminum item. Anyway, the little project went real well and is included as a video on my YouTube Channel, but I’ll include some photos and the YouTube text description here too, as the video is not short.



"Christian Livingstone demonstrates or describes virtually all of the steps taken to effectively install a larger deck onto riding mowers designed for smaller decks, while still being able to utilize, in this case, the same motor, by including a higher-compression cylinder head and an additional performance modification, while also making changes in pulley sizes to reach a happy so-called medium between faster blade speed and higher torque from the motor, thereby giving even better mower cutting performance than before, which provides most of the rationale he gives for doing a project like this. Refurbishment and preservation of the deck body is outlined. Bearings and spindle sets are shown in their refurbishment, along with their upgraded longevity via zerk fitting installation and removal of bearing inner seals, as well as methods of deck parts procurement from tax-free sources. Refitting and relocating hangers and improvement of other mechanisms are demonstrated by using compression springs rather than tension springs. Some TIG welding of deck parts on both mild steel and aluminum fabrication of a pulley guard from diamond plate are also demonstrated. Christian goes off on one related tangent regarding a quick modification and mounting of a 12 volt spreader to the mower in the front, rather than the rear. Two customer properties are used as staging and testing grounds while using a mower-mounted Action Video Cam, which includes overviews of lawn cutting techniques and strategy too. Of course, with this being somewhat of an lengthy video demonstration lasting about 77 minutes, Christian’s humor, enthusiasm, and a few traces of his anti-Statist, anti-Extortion, or anti-Coercion views are also heard. It was a leisurely on-and-off process over about 4 weeks, I think, from when I got the deck till it was done, as there were parts and materials to order and wait for, etc.

I need to send you a microcontroller to hook to the camera and and little more work, it can mow for you. Kidding. Nice work. Good thing you sprayed it, will last a lot longer. We get a lot of decks that are a pain and not worth fixing

What motor mods did you do?

Well,

They were two simple ones, by just putting an 11 hp head (with some slight modification) on the 12 hp flathead motor, which made the compression higher. And there was some slight grinding and sanding at the "eyebrow" just beyond the valve seats.

A pulley that was a half inch larger was also used, to give a bit more torque at the deck without slowing the blade speed much, I think.

Yeah, I think that POR 15 stuff is the right thing for deck preservation, along with a spray top coat.

POR15 is not cheap but worth it on a lawn mower deck for sure. The silver does not mix well but the other color do. Neat project.
