I was having all kinds of erratic burn back and bead issues welding 1/4” AL. After checking everything, I took the gun apart and found the problem. The drive gear on the feeder motor was not tight and let the wire slip and even stop feeding altogether, at times. As you can imagine having a very inconsistent wire speed makes it impossible to get a decent weld. I cleaned off the shaft and put the gear back with some green (wick n loc) loctite. Now welding AL is almost too easy.
FWIW, when looking for the problem, I held the feeder wheel and it would actually stop if I held too hard. Then is when I thought it was either a bad motor or something was slipping.
Hope this helps if you're not happy with welding AL. It may be the gun and not you.
