Thread: Chrome Vanadium handtools

  1. Default Chrome Vanadium handtools

I need to make a stubby combination wrench cutting the middle from one and joining the two ends. The wrench was picked up at a garage sale has chrome vanadium stamped on it.

What rod do I use and are there any tips or tricks for welding this metal?

    Appreciate any pointers.

What welding process are you going to use?
Long arc, short arc, heliarc and in-the-dark!

Didn't notice this was in the TIG category. I would say ER70 or ER80 would do the job. Vee out the joint and try to limit the heat input and you should end up with something close to the original strength. Since you are going shorter, I'm sure it will be plenty strong.

I have some ER70 on hand. I think I'll cut the waste in half and see how it works before I join the ends. Thanks!

Grind the chrome back a little and it welds easy.
