Thread: PP50 Intermittent ARC

  1. Default PP50 Intermittent ARC

The machine will click on and off like a solenoid is kicking on and off. As long as the air is flowing, there is an arc. If the cup on the torch head is tightened down, it won't work at all. If I loosen the cup a couple turns, it will work sometimes. Sometimes it will work for a second and sometimes it will cut for 2 minutes.

I haven't opened the housing so I don't know what the inside looks like but it seems like a bad connection or sticking contacts.

    Any help would be appreciated,

Sounds like worn or bad consumables. Try changing them and let us know how it works. You must have dry air feeding the machine or consumable life will be very bad.

What consumables are you using? Sounds like some knock offs or a problem with clearance.

I have a little inline filter. I also have a filter/oiler for my compressor that I never used. Can I used that without putting any oil in it?

This problem started soon after I got it. Actual cutting time is probably less than 30 minutes and a couple hours attempting. I've never changed any consumables. what's in there is what came with it. I finished my boat project (SS and aluminum)some years ago so most of my cutting lately has been oxy/acet on steel.

    What needs to be replaced?

What type of air drier are you using? The Motor Guard M60 kit is the most bang for the buck. Please download the manual and replace your torch consumables.

The motor guard M60 looked familiar so I googled it and it looks like the old Frantz toilet paper roll oil filter. I've got one of those someplace. I'll look for it. They also showed a failed M60 where the aluminum corroded and lost the seal. That's an indication of poor quality aluminum in the casting. I'll do a little experimenting since I finished my cutting SS with a cutting disc. I'll look up the catalog to see what I need to order.

    Thanks guys!

Well, you'll always find someone that had a failure on something. Doesn't mean its wide spread. Replacing your consumables will probably do more than anything at this point, along with dry air.

I would never put a toilet paper roll in the filter housing. Just because it looks similar and fits doesn't mean it's a good idea. Fibers will come off the toilet roll. The 'kit' comes with three filters that can be dried in the sun and reused many times. I've used mine for years, still using the filters that came with it and haven't had any problems. I run a small filter after mine just in case any fibers ever get downstream. You also need to set the air pressure while it's flowing because there will always be some pressure drop.
