Thread: Another "issue" with gas flow

  1. Default Another "issue" with gas flow

I noticed that I can only get my argon flow to only go to 10 LPM through my torch. (powerpro 164)
I have never needed more than this so for all I know its always been this way.
First I thought maybe my gas lens was clogged. (can that happen?)
So I removed all the guts from the torch.... still only 10 lpm.
I have my gas hose running through a manifold system as suggested in my users manual so i can easily switch from tig to plasma cutting.
Therefore I can divert the gas to shoot straight out to the atmosphere through the plasma air inlet. This allows the regulator to reach its max flow of 25 or so... So I dont think there is an issue with the regulator.
Is there something in the welder or torch that would restrict the flow?

    Gee,

10 LPM is a pretty healthy flow of Argon for a 165 amp machine, which equates to about 20 CFH.

Otherwise, your manifold may be a restricting factor.

The regulator could be faulty as well.

I got one of these cheap flow meters for the torch. You can use them to rule-out problems by checking along the flow path, e.g., after the regulator, but before the solenoid, and after the solenoid, but before the TIG torch, and at the torch itself.

The solenoid inside the machine is undoubtedly not an issue, as it is apparently actuating predictibly, although it is conceivable to have a kink in the hose, after the solenoid, even though I've never heard of that ever happening.

So, it's probably that manifold you added.

But a cheap flow gauge will prove as much.

Open the torch handle to see if you have a kink or other problem there.
