Thread: Power Pro 256 power on issue

  1. Default Power Pro 256 power on issue

Let my Everlast Power Pro 256 sit for about 4 months in my shop. Went to turn it on to do some tig welding and I heard a buzzing like an air leak. Thought maybe the argon valve was leaking but disconnect the argon and still buzzes. Took off the cover and noticed an arcing on what I believe is the points. Something seems to be stuck on high frequency start. I checked the peddle even disconnected the peddle. A soon as I turn the switch on it starts arcing. It should just be the fan running until I engage the Tig peddle.
This has been a great welder for me. I sent an email to Everlast Tech but thought I would ask you on the forum too.

Attached is a video of the arcing.

    Any ideas where to start?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Gee,

I kind of looks like from the camera angle like the points gap terminal connector below is not showing to be connected. But, of course, the view is limited on the video.

You seem to have ruled-out it being a pedal switch issue.

Please let us all hear within this thread what it turns out to be and what was the remedy.

Hopefully they will get back with you. If not, pm me.

On Monday Brett from Everlast Tech contacted me. We went through some process of elimination test, unplugged the H/F board and the arcing stopped. Seems there is an issue with the H/R board. The board is not serviceable by me so my welder is taking a trip to Tenn to get repaired. Estimate is up to $500. So with shipping this will cost up to $620. I have welded a lot with this welder and this is the first time I have had to spend money to fix the machine. Wish it was less money but will be happy to get my welder repaired and calibrated properly.
    Thanks for the responses.

It may not be that much. Hopefully not.

Still waiting, have not heard from Everlast as of 10/20. Fortunately I am a hobby welder and not a fabricator trying to make a living. It is okay with me if they rush those repairs that need their welder back ASAP. Anyway, I will update when I hear something.

So you have sent it in?

Got word Everlast that my welder was ready to ship. They did not give me an explanation of the repair in the email. The technician when I originally called had me do some diagnostic tests and he thought it was the HF board.
UPS says it will arrive at my house on Thurs. I will be home next Tues. Once I run some beads I will let you all know how it welds.

It has been a while but I wanted to update this thread.

My welder arrived back from Everlast well packed an undamaged by the carrier. It took me about month to test I work in Michigan but my house/shop is in Fla. When I got home for Christmas break I fired up and ran some tig beads in steel, stainless and aluminium. The HF and Tig welding functions worked fine and the HF board replacement went fine. However, when I tried the pulse feature it no longer works. Pule worked before I had the HF board failure. I am not sure if Everlast Weld Tests repair units. I don't use pulse that often if at all, old school and pulse with my foot. So at this point I am not going to worry about it and call it good. All in All Everlast was prompt and helpful. Turn around time was about 4 weeks. I did not put any time constraints when I sent the welder to Everlast. I am a hobby welder and figured there are professional welders out there that need their machine fixed faster than I do. So I did not ask for a quick turnaround.

They should test them. However, it could be something that didn't get plugged in well. Just report it to ext 207. They should be able to help.
