Thread: Consumables on a Supercut 50P.

  1. Default Consumables on a Supercut 50P.

First of all hello everyone my name is Robert. I am new to this sight. I recently purchased a Supercut 50P. I noticed that when I first turned on the torch there was a perfect flame on the torch. After cutting a piece of 1/8 aluminum diamond plate when you turn on the torch the flamesputters. I noticed that the electrode is not round on the tip of it. It has a gouge in it now. Could that be the problem? Once you start to cut the sputtering of the flame goes away. My second question is would these consumables fit my torch. I have the red torch I believe it is the 60 amp torch. It has the pink ceramic cups.

As far as the air pressure do you have to adjust the air pressure for different thickness of metal or just the amperage? Thanks for your time and I hope to learn as much as I can from this sight.

From my Experience especially with Aluminum is make a habit of cleaning your tip/ Electrode after each cut . Just use a small wire brush or light emery to clean it up.
I find that the tips get contaminated with Aluminum particles far easier than a mild steel.
Your sputtering is in fact the arc cleaning the contaminents from your tip.
As for Air pressure yes you do need to adjust it somewhat for varying amp settings . If for example you wish to make a pencil thick cut on lighter material you would want to drop the air pressure down to around 45-50psi
this will concentrate the arc in a smaller pattern and give a thinner cut.
I do not like dropping down below the 45psi.
As for Consumables . This is a bit of a pet Peeve for me Yes the listed consumables are correct for your Torch Are they something you should consider using??
I have spent a lot of time looking at various suppliers of Consumables and judging by the price these are being offered for i have a fairly good idea of the Supplier( obviously i can not be 100% certain)
But i know the prices for the various quality of Consumables and this is from either Wenzhou or Ghuanzhou and neither Factory is what i would classify as being Decent Quality.
    Cheers

Thanks Titan for your input. I just want to make sure I am talking about the correct part. The Electrode is the part that you would find after taking off the pink cup and the tip? Is this correct? Like I said in the original post that the "Electrode wasn't round on the tip any more. It has a big gouge on the end. Is that normal? If not how would it become gouged if the tip is convering the electrode? Thanks for your help I am new to this so my questions may be the simplist of things but I would rather ask so I can get the best performance of my cutter. Thanks

The Picture shows the Consumables that we have branded as Everlast. Although These are not the same as the Pack supplied with the units at this time they will at least let you see what is happening.
The Electrode is to the left of the picture and you can see the tip is not rounded but is in fact flat on the top. You can also see the wear in the centre of the tip . I am not sure if this is what you mean by Gouging, this particular set of consumables have been used on testing the Supercut 50 models. I do not pull torches out of boxes as they end up getting dirty , Besides they have been tested at the Factory and there is very little chance of them being damaged during shipping.
I am not sure if i started testing with new consumables on the last batch of SC i tested but lets assume i did .
    These consumables have cut 30" of 5/8" 30" x3/8" and about 100" of 1/4"
mild steel . Stainless steel cuts where just on thin guage and this was about 160"
You can see the wear in both the tip and electrode and you should be able to judge your cons by this. Your cons will show more wear with the same amount of cutting but it gives you a general idea. I never use the the supplied Consumables i prefer our own so i do not have anything lying around to give you a equal comparison
    Cheers

Thanks for your input Titan. I put on a new set of consumables and the flame sputter is still there. Why do you suppose it was a perfect flame when I got it but now it has the flame sputter after the second cut on the aluminum diamond plate?

I have found several causes for flame sputtering.
    1) worn consumables
    2) Mis-machined consumables where the distance is not correct between the consumable and the nozzle.
    3) Poorly gapped points.
    4) Too much air pressure, too little air pressure.
    5)Dirty consumables.
    6) Loose consumables.

    Usually, its #,3,4, or 6

The worn tip is a good sign that you have moisture in your line, particularly with relatively little use.

In my experience, you actually get a wider, less defined flame, when the pressure goes down. Reduced pressure is used in Plasma gouging for a softer, wider flame that can wash metal.
I believe that 60-65 psi, unless the flame is going out, is the ideal pressure for that torch for most situations.

Thanks for the help. You are correct. It was that the air pressure was to high. I brought it down and the flame was perfect once again.

How high was it? How high is it now?

I had it about 70 psi and I turned it down to about 45 psi.
