    I do not think that is possible or advisable. Although it is possible to MELT THROUGH thin metal with any welding process this is not the proper use of a machine and bespeaks a gross lack of respect for the equipment. Mark and Mike could answer your question about how the machine works but probably faster to just wiki "plasma cutter". I know the process of ionization has to do with the movement of the air and the particular kind of metal used in the electrode... halfnium i think it is called....

    Don't try it.
    Even though tig and plasma share roots together, it won't do it

    why couldnt you move the tungsten back inside the cup, the the amp up to 200 or so and bump the argon out to 50 - 60 or so? I think it was just on Jodys site that I saw a video of him setting it up that way
