Top 10 things to do with an old welder.
With all the top “lists” out there today, I figured I’d create my own version on what to do with that old welder you have sitting in the corner gathering dust. Anyone taking these seriously should be aware, that we are not responsible for what happens.
10. Take it to the pawn shop. Apparently, the pawn shop is the first place to go if you are looking to get rid of an older welder with life left in it. Don’t expect to receive much more than the equivalent scrap weight for it though, and if you ever decide to buy it back, it will likely cost you more than if it was new.
9. Use it to charge your batteries. Yes, add a resistor or two and a few modifications to the transformer and presto…you MIGHT have a battery charger on your hands. It may be subject to blow up your batteries though.
8. Thaw water pipes. Look in any old welder manual, and you’ll actually find a section on this. (no longer recommended) This only works if you have metal pipes, which are getting quite scarce…thanks to all the copper thieves these days, you might be taking a shower and find yourself suddenly out of water because they cut them when they KNEW you would be afraid to run out of the house soaped up and naked to chase them down.
7. Turn the top into a checker board. Most old transformer welders are wide enough on the top to easily paint a checker board on top. This will give your buddies something to do when they hang out in your shop while you are trying to work on their junk.
6. Make it look like a vending machine. Gut it, and cut a coin slot in it to scarf up any extra change your buddies have in their pockets thinking they will get a soda or (root) beer out of it, because you know that this is the only pay you are ever going to get out of them for fixing all their junk.
5. Use it to anchor a dead body or your boat. The first, well, it speaks for itself. Might be a buddy who told you how he thought you should weld something. The last, would be better for use in a swift current.
4. Donate it to a museum when inverters have completed their conquest of the market. It’ll be a relic…Sort of like a Soviet tank.
3. Use it to cook eggs. (Search youtube for this one).
2. Put wheels and a seat on it and enter it and your buddy into the next downhill derby. Only add a steering wheel if required.
1. Give it to your buddy so he won’t want to borrow your new welder. Problem solved.
